INDIA’S G20 PRESIDENCY

On the 15th of November 2022, the 17th G20 summit was held in Bali where the baton of the G20 presidency was passed on by Indonesia to India and would be holding it till next year. India has been devoted towards a multilateral and democratic world and this would be a remarkable moment in India's history. India is a believer of the ideology "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam " where it believes that the world is one big family and this position would help it contribute immensely towards the realisation of this dream.

It wasn't an overstatement when our honourable PM Shri. Narendra Modi articulated his intentions to host the G20 presidency as this will prove to be a huge opportunity for India to further strengthen her global standings. This is a stepping stone towards India's vision of a multilateral world and it would be a pivotal time towards global influence.

India's presidency comes during turbulent times when the world is afflicted by military conflicts, inflation and the risk of economic slowdown in which India would have to showcase tremendous pragmatism and the ability to reach diplomatic solutions. India's economy is one of the fastest growing in the world and it is at the dawn of being a key economic player in the world. Being the G20 president provides India with a platform to display what the nation is capable of.

INDIA'S AGENDA AS THE PRESIDENT

India would use its position to contribute towards mutual interdependence and multilateralism. As stated by PM Modi, it will work towards achieving its ideology of One World One Family. It would seek to find a common ground on various issues that ail the globe through diplomatic means. It would aim at a coalition of all the global powers and try to curb the ongoing rift between the west and Russia.

The upcoming G20 targets managing the debt of various institutions of the world which is a looming threat for various organisations. Understanding the issues and challenges faced by developing economies, India's role is to delegate the members and urge them to contribute towards their development.

The drastic climatic changes require major financing for various projects aimed towards climate change and tackling environmental issues. India's presidency is also aimed to find financing for social welfare institutions and other organisations aimed at a better future.

INDIA'S CHALLENGES AS THE PRESIDENT

Current times have proven to be tumultuous with the world facing a range of issues ranging from military conflicts to an economic slowdown. In these times India would have to be more practical to figure out solutions that would be mutually beneficial. The issue of the current ongoing Ukrainian conflict would be a major issue of discussion and would challenge India's diplomatic abilities as the world finds itself divided into two blocs.

The threat of China would always be looming with US-China relations reaching new lows over the Taiwan conflict and also China's desire to form a new world order as a check to the US and its allies who constitute the major chunk of the G20 countries. India would have to come up with ways to promote the development of welfare and economic institutions in developing countries. It will have to guide the world as it has just come out of a global pandemic which has formed cracks in the economies and development of all the countries. Climate change is another issue that India would have to work on with cooperation without damaging the already fragile economies post covid.

CONCLUSION

The G20 presidency is a huge opportunity and responsibility that will test India throughout the year. With ongoing issues, India would face challenges but also allow it to showcase its might on a global forum. The G20 presidency combined with the UNSC and SCO presidency would mean 2023 would be a historic year that would strengthen its global position and help India emerge as a global force.
